OPPO’s latest Reno series of smartphones is here – and this is the OPPO Reno11 Pro 5G. It comes with a beautiful matte finish body, curved screen, a triple-camera setup, 80W of SuperVOOC charging, and is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset.

So, how’s the new Reno11 Pro 5G? Let’s find out in today’s video – starting with the chipset first.

Performance

This chipset is interesting to me because of two things – a lot of you guys want to know the performance of this chip and MediaTek has improved a lot over the years. So, we tried it out with Genshin Impact at the high graphical settings preset and the performance is actually really good. We can get at least 40 fps and I’m just impressed by it.

Remember, the Dimensity 8200 is considered to be a mid-range chip and with this level of performance – it is actually magnificent.

Now, remember that in all our previous videos, we said that OPPO does not allow games to be ran above 60fps even though games like Subway Surfers clearly does not have any FPS limitations? Well, that’s still the case now, but we can now go into the settings menu and fix that.

Once we forced the game to run at 120Hz, we can finally get 120fps in this game. It’s a simple fix that OPPO could’ve implemented early, and I really do think OPPO needs to enable 120Hz for more apps by default so we don’t have to do this detective work for every single game that we play.

Battery life

But how’s the battery life then? Well, this phone has a 4,600mAh battery which isn’t the largest and the battery life is rather… disappointing. Using our standardized battery life test, it lasts for about 10 hours and 40 minutes only and I expected it to reach at least 11 and a half hours.

Charging test

The charging time is also another thing that I’m disappointed with. You see, this phone comes with a 100W SuperVOOC charger and of course, it is proprietary. You’ll have to use their own charger and cable to fast-charge the device to actually fast-charge your device. It’ll take around 37 minutes to charge from 15% to 100%.

However, this phone does not support USB-PD standards and the most it can take in while plugged into my Ugreen 140W GaN charger is – 13V according to our new tool. Yeah, this is disappointing especially if we want to fast-charge while traveling as we have to bring their own charger and cable. Nothing else will work.

Says supports 18W of USB-PD but actually just 13W?

When plugged into a USB-PD charger, it’ll take around 85 minutes to charge from 15% to 100%.

Software – ColorOS 14

And speaking of the battery, I want to move on to the software now because the new ColorOS 14 operating system did bring a few new features that are related to the battery. First, we have a brand new Battery Booster description here that takes up half of the screen and it looks more like an ad than anything else because I cannot tap on it or do anything.

We can also see the battery health, which is a nice thing to have, and we also have two more new charging options. One is to make the phone learn your behavior and control how the battery is being charged – hopefully, it’s smart enough to actually fast-charge the phone when I actually need it, and another option is to outright stop charging at 80% battery.

And one of my new favorite features is the ability to auto-censor the profile picture and name of my screenshots of Facebook Messenger or anything similar. That’s actually convenient to have!

However, there are lots of ads. I think it is even more than before, actually. You see, the list of pre-installed apps now goes all the way to the second screen and fills up half of it. Not only that – ads are now even found in system apps like the Game Turbo toolbar that we pull up while we’re playing a game, also has an ad now.

Oh my god. Why is this happening?

There are a few more new features added here and there – like cropping out the subject by just tapping and holding on a certain objects in the photos gallery app.

Cameras

Since we’re talking about photos, let’s take a look at the cameras of this phone. It has a triple camera setup – one main camera, one ultrawide, and one telephoto camera. Thank you OPPO for not including a useless depth sensor!

But when I looked at the telephoto camera, I thought this is a periscope lens. Turns out, it’s a a pancake lens. They just added that line there to make it look like a periscope lens.

Design

And then the design. This phone has an elegant design with no sharp edges or corners. Everything is rounded and I really like how well this design goes with the grey color. The sparkly matte grey finish at the back also looks sleek.

However, I’m just not a fan of this camera bump. It’s a waste of space and could’ve been a lot smaller. Also, the thickness of this camera bump is… really thick.

Screen

Okay, how’s the screen then? It’s a 6.74-inch OLED screen with up to 120Hz refresh rate and 2412×1080 pixels in resolution. The screen quality is pretty standard, actually. We get 100% of sRGB and around 97% of DCI-P3 color gamuts with a low ΔE number, and the maximum brightness is at around 800 nits.

Nothing too spectacular or out of the ordinary here.

What I’m concerned is the curved screen. Yes, it looks nice and feels great to hold – but finding a screen protector is difficult. It’s impossible to use a tempered glass screen protector and the only ones we can use with this type of screen is either the usual film type of screen protector, or hydrogel.

A few more things to mention

And we still have a few more things to talk about the OPPO Reno11 Pro. It has an IR blaster at the top, and a USB 2.0 port at the bottom – that also means no display output over USB-C. Also, no audio jack.

What we do have is a dual SIM slot.

Should you buy the new OPPO Reno11 Pro 5G??

Okay, finally – should you buy the OPPO Reno11 Pro 5G? Well, RM2,499 is the price of this phone and I thought it was going to be more expensive. It is still more expensive than some other phones with similar specs but with all the features that OPPO built in the software side, I think it’s an okay price.
