Samsung does not only make phones but they are also one of the world’s largest memory chip maker too. In the latest Samsung Tech Day 2019, the company unveiled 3 new chips – the new Exynos 990 chipset for smartphones, the new 5G Exynos Modem 5123, and a 12GB LPDDR4X RAM chip.

Presumably, these 3 new chips will be found in next year’s lineup of products. Personally, I’m looking forward to the next generation of Samsung smartphones with the new Exynos 990 chipset.

Exynos 990

For whatever reason, Samsung changed the naming scheme of their flagship mobile chipset. From the Exynos 9820 on the Galaxy S10 series to the Exynos 9825 on the Galaxy Note10 series, Samsung decided to name their next upcoming chipset to Exynos 990.

The Exynos 990 now has dual-core neural processing unit (NPU) and a beefier digital signal processor (DSP) that can perform over ten-trillion operations per second. Just like the Exynos 9825, the new Exynos 990 is also manufactured with the 7nm EUV lithography process which you can learn more here.

Samsung Exynos 990

Looking at the specs sheet of the Exynos 990, it comes with a lot of major improvements:

  • Exynos 990
    • Octa-core CPU
      • Dual-core custom CPU
      • Dual-core Cortex-A76
      • Quad-core Cortex-A55
    • GPU
      • Mali-G77 MP11 with 11 cores
    • Supports up to 9,216,000 pixels in resolution
      • 3840×2400 or 4096×2160
    • Supports UFS 3.0 NAND storage chip
    • Support for LPDDR5 RAM chip
    • Support for high pixel cameras
      • 108MP single-camera
      • 24.8MP + 24.8MP dual-cameras
    • Support for high video capturing
      • 8K 30fps
      • 4K 120fps
      • 10-bit H.265 encoding

By looking at the specs sheet of the Exynos 990 chipset, we can predict a few things. Firstly, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11 could be using the company’s very own 108MP camera sensor. With this massive sensor also comes 8K 30fps or 4K at 120fps recording. That means you can have 4K videos in slow motion too – which is unheard of for a smartphone.

However, there are no mentions of any maximum display refresh rate that this chipset can handle. Perhaps Samsung will have a 90Hz Dynamic AMOLED display?

5G Exynos Modem 5123

Moving on to 5G, Samsung developing a new modem for it. Little details have been made public about this modem.

The Exynos Modem 5123 is also manufactured with the 7nm EUV lithography process. Presumably, this chip will also be mass-produced for more smartphones in the near future.

12GB LPDDR4X uMCP

uMCP, also known as UFS-based MCP (multichip package), is a method to pack multiple memory devices into a single chip, creating a package.

Samsung has developed a method to combine 4x 24Gb LPDDR4X chips into a single eUFS (embedded UFS) 3.0 NAND storage chip.

Samsung LPDDR4X 24Gb
24Gb = 3GB

Gb here stands for gigabit, so converting it back to gigabyte is to divide by 8. So, 24Gb = 3GB. Stacking four of these chips into a single package creates 12GB.

This allows more RAM to be packaged into a smaller footprint, allowing smartphones to break the 8GB mark that is found in many smartphones these days.
