Samsung holds a lot of world’s firsts in their portfolio and today, their adding one more as the latest smartphone from them is the Galaxy A80. This is the first ever smartphone with a rotating + popup triple camera phone. This is also the first ever true full view display from Samsung – no notches and no cutouts.
The all new Galaxy A80 is Samsung’s first ever smartphone which they are moving away from the “era of selfie” to the “era of live” as in live videos. To get the best picture and video quality, the rear-facing cameras are always the better ones. Hence, Samsung just neglects the selfie camera entirely in favor of the rear-facing cameras.
Triple rear-facing cameras, to be exact. Samsung’s design here is by combining two different technologies – the top part pops out like the OPPO Find X, then rotates to the front – like the OPPO N1. By combining these two technologies, the Samsung Galaxy A80 is able to neglect the selfie camera entirely while keeping a very high screen-to-body ratio.
In terms of specs, the Galaxy A80 has:
- 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 2400×1080 pixels in resolution
- New Infinity display with no notch, no cutout
- Octa-core (2x 2.2 GHz + 6x 1.7 GHz)
- 8GB RAM
- 128GB storage (no microSD card slot)
- Triple rotating+popup cameras
- Main: 48MP f/2.0 with PDAF
- Ultrawide: 8MP f/2.2 fixed focus
- 3D TOF camera
- 3,700mAh battery with 25W fast charger
- Android 9.0 Pie with Samsung One UI
From the specs alone, we can see that there are even more Samsung’s first in the Galaxy A80 itself. We have the first ever 48MP camera on a Samsung smartphone – which is a good change – and also 3D TOF camera. This 3D TOF camera can be used for laser autofocus as well, though it is not listed in Samsung’s specs list. We will have to try it for ourselves to know for sure.
As weird as it might seem, the Galaxy A80 does not have a 3.5mm audio jack. Samsung could have placed it at the bottom like any other Galaxy Note or Galaxy S smartphone, but they did not. It also does not have a microSD card slot which is weird.
The Galaxy A80 is certainly an interesting phone which I am honestly excited to get my hands on.
Currently, there are no pricing or availability date for the Galaxy A80 in Malaysia just yet. We will update this space when we have more information.
