Another wave of active COVID-19 cases means yet another Movement Control Order. Compared to the first time, there’s a shift in how Malaysians respond to this 2 week lockdown.

According to Shopee by matching transaction data between pre MCO 1.0 (March 16 to 20) and 2.0 (Jan 11 to 15), while an increase in traffic to the platform and shopping activities is well expected, there are no signs of panic buying as no heavy spikes are detected around the 5 day period. Additional patterns also revealed that Malaysians already adopted tech items and home improvement tools to aid remote education and workforce, these are on top of the usual food and beverage, face masks, cleaning, and health products.

Here are some more key findings with interesting numbers.

  • Over 550,000 units of tech items including laptops, smartphones, tablets, network components, keyboards, printers, and audio systems; a 4.5x increase
