As hospitals continue to grow in numbers, we need more nurses to cope with the increased number of hospital rooms. Usually, there will be a certain number of nurses per floor in a hospital, and we were shown a brand new smart system that is made specifically in hospitals. As for those who wants caretakers on demand, there is also another service that manages these nurseries.

Let us talk about this new smart hospital system. It consists of a few parts that works together in one smart ecosystem that provides more value for the patient.

Firstly, let us take a look at the dashboard that summarizes the information about the patients. Every patient occupies one square, and this square tells us a lot of information – such as the recovery stage of a patient after surgery, whether the patient is on bed, sitting at the side, or is not on the bed. It can also display the patient’s sleep information too.

To achieve such an impressive feat, the patients’ beds are laced with sensors. From what we experienced, the bed feels like any other bed – and the sensors are embedded and hidden under the mattress.

Of course, the big TV here is only for demonstration purposes. We were shown a mobile workstation that runs off hot-swappable batteries. The mobile workstations is – as the name suggests – mobile as it has a set of wheels where you can cart it to anywhere you like.

For every patient, an e-ink display is set up to display the daily reminders of what is there to be done for the patient – like medication dosage and time, exercises, allergies, the doctor’s information, and everything in between. The reason to use e-ink instead of any backlit displays is to prevent distractions or irritations to be patients while they rest. This is also the largest e-ink display ever, measuring at 42-inches.

While many of us have seen or used the alarm system to alert the nurses, we were shown the usage of fitness bands as the new alert system for nurses. The patients have a remote control which makes the fitness bands vibrate and show which patient alerted the nurses. This is great as it is silent yet more effective since it vibrates on the nurse’s arm directly.

On every patient’s bed, there is also a terminal which is touch-sensitive which lets the patients themselves select what they want to do. Currently at most hospitals that I have seen, the TV is turned on all the time. With this terminal, the patient can browse the web, watch some shows, or play games on the bed. When the patient is done using the terminal, it can be stowed away within an arm’s reach.

We have only highlighted a small part of the Smart Healthcare Expo 2019, as we have also seen the utilization of AI to predict diseases and discussed the possibilities to utilize 5G network to perform real-time cross-country surgeries.

While that sounds like a great future, we still have to ensure our policymakers have proper laws that govern such processes. Hence like what was said during the Smart City Summit & Expo 2019 opening speech, we all play our roles into shaping our smart cities, homes, and everything else.
