I think most of you here must have used Google Maps at least twice in their lifetime. You might be familiar with this, the old Google Maps. Equipped with a simple search interface. The right side is where you browse the world while the left panel is where all the information is displayed.

Google is now going for the ‘seamless’ interface. Meaning, everything is going to be in one place, the map. Yes, everything now are not going to be displayed in sections or parts. Your search results will appear on the map itself, giving you a full 100% view of the map while getting information without having to look away from the map. Everything is beautiful with the flipping and fluid transition animations that lets you know what truly is going on while you interact with it.

This means that your search will be a lot more easier and efficient. You can also use the [item],[place] format such as ‘food, Cyberjaya’. Though this is only the suggested format – the search function got a little more close to our natural English language. You can even type things like “McDonald’s near Cyberjaya” and it’ll show you on the map itself!

There are certain places where you can jump right into a building where someone submitted their photosphere. Being an entire crowd-sourced picture map now, the images can ensure accuracy to a certain degree.

Google Maps 3D in Malaysia also works for the vector maps only, and the 3D satellite images doesn’t work yet. Street View… still no hope yet. Even turn-by-turn navigation is not up yet. I find it funny that only KLCC, Pavillion KL and the KL Tower has 3D vector mapping but not the other landmarks. KL Tower and KLCC is understandable, but Pavillion KL? Not even Midvalley Megamall has 3D vector map yet. And oh – the Giant Hypermarket I pass by every morning is still shown as a blank piece of road on Google Maps’s earth mode, though labelled as Giant.

You can try it out now earlier than anyone else by getting an invitation from Google, here.
