Toshiba has announced that they are shaking hands with ZapBatt for a “United We Stand” play to bring LTO battery technology to the next level.
For some context, the LTO battery cells, or lithium titanium oxide, are one of the latest battery options created to serve the micro-mobility marketplace as their natural properties enable them to charge at unprecedented speeds while having a high charge retention rate. While Toshiba is in charge of the main plan, ZapBatt is here to unleash the potential of LTO in multiple ways.
Here’s what kind of challenges Toshiba ran into and solved with the help of ZapBatt.
- Chips – LTO does not use chips in its design. Therefore, ZapBatt’s custom LTO optimized battery management system (BMS) is capable of reconfiguring itself to match the unique voltages that vary as cell chemistry grows, meaning the management system is fully programmable
- Voltage – Through ZapBatt’s unique Bi-directional adaptive terminal voltage (BATV) tech, one can digitally control the voltage of a system with a simple piece of software. Realizing the idea of being a universal adapter, existing lithium-ion chemistry can be swapped out with an LTO-based solution easily
- Energy Density – Integrated AI will be in charge of optimizing a system’s efficiency by smartly analyzing how much energy is being used and it is possible to further the movement of energy much more quickly via algorithm calculation
Capitalizing on these problems and thus solving them, the LTO cells made by Toshiba is now better than ever such as providing up to 100% usable charge without shortening cycle life and operating on super low temperatures which can go as low as -30°C, on top of the fast charging property mentioned earlier.
Other notable advantages that these LTO cells has include reduced operating expenses, e-waste, and zero fire risk.
The company is conducting several micro-mobility pilot demonstrations in North America and the batteries are estimated to be commercially available in early 2023.
