As the US is getting more and more cautious towards China, President Trump is now looking into banning TikTok as soon as today. President Trump is once again citing security concerns.

As The Verge has reported, President Trump has claimed that he will sign the documents to order the ban today. The ban will be announced either via executive order or emergency economic powers.

This is not the first time that President Trump is banning a company from operating in the US because the company is based in China. ZTE and Huawei – and Huawei in particular who got hit the hardest – were just the start.

In the official TikTok account on TikTok (haha), a video was posted. This video is about a message that the US General Manager of TikTok wants to tell all of us.

Of course, President Trump’s concern here is because of TikTok’s relationship with China. But then again – a bunch of self-produced videos doesn’t seem like something that is to be concerned about. But as Linus has explained in one of his episodes on TechQuickie, TikTok is owned by ByteDance.

UPDATE: TikTok to divest in order to circumvent the ban

South China Morning Post reported that the Chinese owners of TikTok are looking to “divest operation” so they may continue operating in the US. In order to explain what’s going on, here’s a quick summary.

To “divest operations” here means that ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, will let another company handle its operations in the US. That way, I suppose Trump won’t ban TikTok? Or at least reconsider the new cards on the table?

ByteDance can’t actually let TikTok be banned in the US as there are investors that said a large majority of ByteDance’s outside investors are from the US.

As of now, there is still no word from Trump about the ban.
