This is a rather unconventional “review” article that we’re doing. Yes, we’re showing the Vivo TWS Neo pair of true wireless earphones here because it is – as far as we know – the world’s first-ever pair of true wireless earphones using aptX Adaptive codec.

And that aptX Adaptive codec is what caught my attention the most. We’ve reviewed and tested multiple different Bluetooth audio codecs in terms of latency and found out that there is indeed a big discrepancy depending on what codec is used.

We have also mentioned that aptX Adaptive in multiple different videos in the past, and today – we finally got to test it out. We were amazed by the results that we obtained, too.

In terms of the audio latency, aptX Adaptive seems to be very device-dependent. From our results, it seems like newer smartphones with better chipsets have much lower latency compared to last-generation chipsets. Still, the aptX Adaptive can maintain a consistent latency of <500ms in our tests.

aptX adaptive implementation is rather weird since some smartphones have the option to change or toggle between high quality and “not high quality” to presumably improve the audio latency. Perhaps the implementation will be flushed out and have an even more consistent result across different devices in the future.

Now, back to the Vivo TWS Neo. Its design is rather weird as it is pebble-shaped, has a very shiny outlook and the USB-C charging port is also at the bottom of the case. The Vivo TWS Neo can’t stand on its own.

The sound quality is alright, though we’re not focusing on that in this “review”. For the price of RM369, you can now get the Vivo TWS Neo and start gaming with low-latency wireless audio (device-dependent) via aptX Adaptive. It’s a very viable option – as shown with the ROG Phone 3.

Still, I have to say that aptX Adaptive is very promising and it has proven its ability to become the de facto best wireless audio codec for both high-res audio and providing low-latency for gaming via Bluetooth.
