Out of nowhere, Western Digital decides to acquire the entire asset of Upthere, Inc., a cloud services company that provides a better way to keep, find, and share what’s important.
We don’t know how much it’s acquired for, by the way.
Upthere provides an enhanced storage experience designed to be the single home for all of a user’s photos, videos, documents, and music. The Upthere app is platform agnostic and available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, as well as macOS and Windows PCs. The addition of Upthere’s technology and team to Western Digital’s Client Solutions business unit will enhance the company’s consumer products portfolio with new cloud-based offerings.
“Upthere is delivering on its mission to transform the personal storage market, and we share their focus on providing consumers more rich and meaningful experiences with their data. I’m pleased to have Upthere CEO Chris Bourdon join the team as a strategic leader. His extensive software expertise will help accelerate our user experience and cloud services imperatives across all aspects of the Client Solutions business.” – Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager of Client Solutions at Western Digital
Chris Bourdon, the CEO of Upthere, Inc. also added a few words.
“The Upthere team is excited to join Western Digital, with whom we share a long-standing relationship and commitment to significantly advance the consumer experience through cloud-based solutions. It is clear that Western Digital recognizes the great technology and products we have developed and this transaction is a testament to our hard-working team. I am confident that, together, we will continue to innovate cloud-based services with the potential to revolutionize how consumers and businesses create, manage and keep their important data.”
I’m actually looking forward to what Western Digital will do with the technology and knowledge that Upthere has to offer. Using the WD DL2100 NAS for so long, I can only say that Western Digital needs an overhaul in their cloud segment. Seriously, even the WD Sync software is buggy as heck and can break sync for no reason. The only way to fix? Total reinstallation. Which didn’t work for me the last time, and I resorted to GoodSync.
Even the My Cloud website is confusing now. They’ve just revamped it a little recently, and now there are two different sign in buttons. TWO!!! And they both lead to two different types of logins. They’re not inter-connected too, but you can login with the same ID. You either login to My Cloud Home with the top button, or login to your My Cloud with the bottom button.
I have no idea why, but perhaps Upthere can help Western Digital in this. As a customer, I really do hope that Upthere will do something.
