Let’s take a look at this brand new gimbal from Zhiyun. It’s already been out in the market for a while now but we’re here at Thailand to attend the grand regional launch of this new gimbal. The Zhiyun Weebill S is a camera gimbal but comes with a lot of features to help the user.
Now, the Weebill S is not an ordinary gimbal. It’s a tiny 3-axis gimbal for your bigger cameras, and has a footprint smaller than a piece of A4 paper. It can be safely kept in a bag because it has dedicated locks for each motor.
Compared to the Weebill Lab, the first generation of the Weebill gimbal, it now has a 300% more powerful motor and 50% increase in responsiveness of the gimbal movement.
It now supports a lot more cameras too. While the first generation seems to be made for Sony mirrorless cameras, the Weebill S can now support DSLRs and larger zoom lenses too. Zhiyun has a camera compatibility list that you can check here.
In terms of the flexibility of this gimbal, it is able to be gripped in two ways – either the bottom of the gimbal with the tripod screwed there, or at the back of the gimbal. I personally prefer screwing the gimbal at the back of the gimbal as I can hold it much more ergonomically and has better weight distribution, allowing for better control.
There is also a lot more space allowing taller cameras, opening the potential to use the Zhiyun Weebill S with a Sony mirrorless camera alongside a shotgun microphone.
The Weebill S can also have controls without having the need for a smartphone app. The OLED display on the Weebill S itself will display all the settings that you desire.
Zhiyun also innovated on a quick-release mechanism for the camera baseplate so you can take out the camera and swap batteries without having to rebalance the camera every time. Brilliant time-saver!
The Zhiyun Weebill S also has an ecosystem of other products to work in tandem. Firstly, the zoom/focus pro package to make use of the wheel on the Weebill S too. Now that’s convenient.
Then, the full package of the Weebill S comes with a TransMount Image Transmission Module wireless video transmitter to be mounted at the bottom of the camera on the gimbal. This allows you to connect your smartphone and see what the camera is seeing, and able to have the camera controlled by the phone’s gyroscope.
Zhiyun also told us that there is the TransMount Image Transmission Receiver video receiver that will be available for sale. With that, you can have video output to a total of 3 different devices, with support of iOS, Android, and also external monitors. That means my videographer and director can watch what the camera is recording at the same time without cramming into a tight space to watch.
