At Computex 2019, we visited Dell’s exhibition and we have to say – the entire layout of the place is actually stunning. There are props for different series of the laptops that are means for different users and use case scenarios, alongside with a special side for Dell Cinema to highlight Dell’s focus on better media consumption.
This year around, Dell showed us many products that will be available in the market very soon – ranging from the new XPS 13 2-in-1, a companion Inspiron 3000 2-in-1, and even Precision Mobile Workstations with NVIDIA Quadro GPUs for on-the-go rendering. With so many products, we have a slew of questions to ask regarding these products too.
We first sat down with Mano Gialusis, Product Manager, to talk about the Dell Mobile Workstations. Here are the questions from our interview:
Nasi Lemak Tech: The Dell Precision 5540 Mobile Workstation is using an XPS body. How do you cool the hardware inside?
Mano: There are two heatsinks and shared heatpipes between the CPU and GPU.
Nasi Lemak Tech: For the cooling system, it does help by propping up the laptop at the hinge area. Is Dell looking to do something similar as well?
Mano: Yes, and we are considering to tune the cooling system for future models as well. Perhaps a cutout through the middle.

Nasi Lemak Tech: Since the new Dell Precision Mobile Workstations are using overclockable CPUs, how much can it be overclocked?
Mano: Dell does not allow overclocking but is focused on providing stability. The RAM is not able to be overclocked too, running at 2666MHz while the SuperSpeed RAM variants is able to achieve 3200MHz.
Nasi Lemak Tech: Any hot-swappable storage for the Precision Workstations?
Mano: Yes, the 17-inch models have a quick-release latch for M.2 SSD behind the battery door.
Then, we also sat down with Eddy Goyanes, Product Manager – Alienware, to obviously talk about Alienware.
Nasi Lemak Tech: It’s interesting to see the new Alienware m15 and m17 have Tobii Eye Tracking. Though it is quite niche, so why implement it?
Eddy: The list of supported applications and games for Tobii Eye Tracking is ever growing. There is also Alienware Academy, a platform for you to upload your gaming session and let the pros analyze your gameplay. Tobii Eye Tracking helps by tracking where your eye is looking at every second, hence able to train your eyes.
Nasi Lemak Tech: Is it able to overclock these new Alienware laptops since they have HK variants of the CPUs?
Eddy: It is doable with the new Alienware Advenced Cryo-Tech 3.0, though overclockability varies from system to system. On stock, with its new 6-phase VRM on CPU and 8-phase VRM on GPU, it is able to maintain the performance and score 10% higher performance on 3DMark Time Spy. You can further overclock the system using Alienware Command Center.

Nasi Lemak Tech: We’ve seen many crazy designs in the market so far – we have one that open the backplate when the hinge is opened, and another slider design that reveals additional cooling. Is Dell doing anything out of the ordinary in the future?
Eddy: Dell has always been about design with purpose, but with a twist on using lots of premium materials. If consumers want it, we will make it.
Nasi Lemak Tech: Can you explain more about the Eyesafe Technology?
Eddy: This new technology reduces blue light with no quality changes. (Note: click here to learn more about Eyesafe)
Nasi Lemak Tech: How does Alienware differentiate themselves from the ever-growing list of competitions?
Eddy: Currently, Alienware is still the premium gaming brand where we pack the best technologies in them. We also have Dell Gaming, which offers an affordable option.
After that, we sat down with Eddie Goh, Director – Consumer Design, to talk about the Dell EDG (Experience Design Group) for Inspiron and G series.
Nasi Lemak Tech: We’ve seen the new Inpsiron 11 3000 2-in-1 and its specs. Is it meant to be an ultraportable, secondary device for those who already have a powerful desktop?
Eddie: Yes, Dell always design products with purpose. The new Inspiron 11 3000 2-in-1 is designed with those specs and coupled with good keyboard, hinges and design with good aesthetic. It is actually great for kitchen use to look at recipes or following cooking videos, or for kids as well.

Nasi Lemak Tech: That Inspiron 11 3000 2-in-1 is a fully AMD Ryzen-powered laptop. Will we see more AMD-powered laptops from Dell in the near future?
Eddie: Definitely, we will have more to come soon, particularly for the Vostro and G series.
Last but definitely not the least, we also sat down with Chandler Chen, Director – Product Marketing, Consumer PC, to talk about Dell EDG (Experience Design Group) for Inspiron & Vostro series of laptops.
Nasi Lemak Tech: I personally find the current naming scheme for Dell products work, but there are too many numbers and is confusing at times. Does Dell have any plans of changing that?
Chandler: Yes, we acknowledge that the naming is somewhat of a mouthful. We are looking to solve that.
Nasi Lemak Tech: With the new laptops having OLED panels, how is Dell going to mitigate burn-in?
Chandler: We think that burn-in is rare these days since OLED technology is really good now.

Nasi Lemak Tech: Can you explain the idea behind Dell Cinema?
Chandler: We saw the data that many people are cutting cords and moving away from shared living room TV to personal computers and tablets to consume media – be it music or videos or movies. Dell Cinema is providing the best personal media consumption experience, with focus on both display and sound specifically.
