ASUS ROG motherboards
Firstly, let’s talk about the market segregation of what ASUS is offering. We have a family of gaming motherboards now, and they the highest end is the iconic ASUS Republic of Gamers lineup – the ASUS ROG.
Surely, the ASUS ROG lineup has the best features that ASUS has to offer for their motherboards. In this generation, ASUS is offering the new LiveDash OLED, M.2 heatsink to prevent thermal throttling (especially on high-end M.2 PCIe SSDs) and pre-mounted I/O shield. ASUS claims that the pre-mounted I/O shield is not just for looks but also for ESD protection. And Aura Sync, of course.
Let’s not forget about the brand new 3rd generation T-topology for RAMs as the signals between two DIMMs in the same channel will travel the same distance between the DIMMs and the CPU itself. OptiMem methodology is a new technology that increases the signal’s quality by having a larger open eye with cleaner signals. This can ensure stability during overclocking.
Speaking of overclocking, it’s been made a lot easier as there’s a preset built-in to the UEFI right now that can load an overclock profile that tries to overclock the CPU to 5GHz. This is done automagically for you, but of course – the end result still depends on your luck with the silicon lottery as not all chips are made the same.
Here are some of the new ASUS ROG motherboards for the new Z370 Coffee Lake architecture.
ROG STRIX motherboards
Then on the mainstream lineup of motherboards, we have the ROG STRIX lineup. Now, STRIX is a name that we didn’t hear for quite some time already, right? Turns out, ROG STRIX is still around – but this time ROG STRIX is positioned to be the value series of gaming motherboards.
The aesthetics of the ROG STRIX motherboards are actually quite prominent – it has a large, angular VRM heatsink with the word “STRIX” on it. On higher end ROG STRIX boards, there’s a large I/O cover that compliments the heatsink too.I’d say, aesthetically, it has its own identity.
I’d say, aesthetically, it has its own identity. Of course, there’s Aura Sync as well.
Here are some of the ROG STRIX boards. Again, the aesthetics for these boards are looking good.
ASUS TUF Gaming motherboards
Then comes the rebrand of TUF series motherboards. It’s now repositioned to become ASUS’s new lineup of value-oriented gaming motherboards with the moniker of TUF Gaming. It’s built for the masses who just want to get started and not to tinker around with the advanced features.
I mean, remember back in the days where we have the white colored TUF board with plates at the front and back. That’s what the original TUF boards are known for – but now, ASUS has decided to transform the iconic TUF series of motherboards to become TUF Gaming – a series of gaming motherboards that is aimed towards value gamers. Gone are the days with the iconic plates. Gone are the days where TUF series motherboards are white. It’s black and yellow now (hello, Wiz Khalifa!)
According to ASUS, TUF Gaming is meant for entry-level gamers or first-time builders – which is actually quite the opposite of the original TUF series motherboards’ target audience.
Prime series motherboards
Now, this is one of the more.. in-between series of motherboards. The Prime series is placed alongside with the TUF series and somewhat overlaps partially with the ROG STRIX series too. It’s meant for “professionals and all-around builders”, according to ASUS.
At least with the Prime series, ASUS still has a white-ish colored motherboard in the market.
