Originally, OPPO announced that they have been working on a new type of periscope lens to achieve amazing levels of zoom. However, that was since MWC 2017 – more than 2 years ago. Then this year, OPPO came on to the stage again and announced that they have a new triple camera system that allows you to get a total of 10x lossless zoom.
OPPO has this graph to show you how the zoom is handled by each of the cameras to create the continuous 10x lossless zoom. Every camera handles a certain range of focal length and hence, totaling up to 10x lossless zoom.
We got our hands on an unknown device which OPPO Malaysia has only mentioned to us that “it will be in the market soon” without dates or names. Even the protective case on this phone is completely glued shut.
Obviously, this phone has a total of 3 cameras. From the top, we have this list of cameras. We did an experiment to find out when and where the handoff happens:
- Main camera: alleged 48MP sensor; from 1.7x to 8.2x zoom; has OIS and autofocus
- Ultrawide camera: from 1x (reference) to 1.7x zoom; has OIS and autofocus
- Periscope telephoto: from 8.3x to 20x zoom
OPPO is using the super ultrawide angle camera as the base for reference here. This is interesting since OPPO also employed the algorithm to fix the fish eye lens distortion out of the box.
OPPO Malaysia also let us to take whatever pictures we want at a beautiful venue with a fantastic view of the KL city center, and we were also given the privilege to copy the pictures taken off the phone and share it with you here. We have taken a few sets of images ourselves to see what truly is going on with the OPPO 10x lossless zoom technology.
The pictures taken and shown here are not the finalized version of the phone yet as the final retail device might have a different sensor/lens and also improved algorithm for the cameras.

Understandably, the metadata has been jumbled up as the device we have here is not finalized. We will have to wait until the retail version of the device arrives to the market before making our final judgment. Luckily for us, we don’t have to wait for long as this device is coming in Q2 of 2019.
We will reserve all comments and judgment about the OPPO 10x lossless zoom technology until it has arrived to the market.
We will surely keep you updated on this technology as it is very interesting to see something new in the market. After all, OPPO is one of the pioneers in camera form factors and technologies. Remember the OPPO N1?
