Huawei’s founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei, has accepted media interviews in Shenzhen to address all of the recent bans. It was first announced that Huawei as an entire corporation has been added to the US ban list, and eventually followed by ARM and other companies.
The media interview was held on the 21st of May, and here is the transcript and summary of some of the important burning questions that we all have. What was not addressed here though, is HongMeng OS.
Responding to the 90-day temporary license – “make sure our job is properly done”
This affects all of Huawei and HONOR smartphones. Ren Zhengfei said that within this time period, “most important thing for the company now is to make sure that their job is properly done” while also stating that whatever action the U.S. government makes is out of Huawei’s control.
Responding to the usage of U.S. made chips –
Ren Zhengfei has stated that Huawei will not boycott the use of U.S. made chips even if their own chips are low in cost. He also “appealed for the common development of chip technology.”
He also said that Huawei themselves can develop and produce chips with qualities on par with the U.S. ones, but it does not mean that they will stop buying U.S. made chips. He added this statement too:
In the future, we still have to buy U.S. chips on a large scale, as long as they have a license to sell. But if there is a shortage on supply, then we will have a backup.
Huawei’s 5G technology will not be affected, but others will take 2-3 years to catch up
Ren Zhengfei also addressed the concerns of 5G technology developed by Huawei. While many countries are indeed banning Huawei’s 5G equipment, the development of the technology itself is not affected by the U.S. restrictions.
He said that they do need to learn from U.S. technology in terms of its depth in expertise. But in the 5G area, Huawei is at the forefront, although it can’t be denied that there is still a huge gap between China and the U.S. on the whole.
For cooperation with European companies, Ren Zhengfei said:
European companies cooperate with us very closely. Their 5G capacity is 20 times that of 4G, 2G is 10,000 times, thus power consumption is reduced 10 times, and volume is reduced by 70%. We have materials that will not corrode for decades, these characteristics are very suitable for Europe.
Do not incite nationalist sentiments
On a larger scale, more political side of things, Ren Zhengfei stated that “some bolster the company driven by patriotism, while others deem that Huawei is holding society’s patriotic feelings hostage.”
He urged that Huawei’s product should not be tied to patriotism.
Not easy to make our own chips, but the journey is worth it
While the media interview is made prior to the announcement of ARM’s ban, Ren Zhengfei has expressed that while it is “very difficult” for Huawei to create their own chips, it is a venture worth going through.
Ren Zhengfei said that “at the highest point, we have conflicts with the United States, but in the end, we still have to contribute to humanity together.”
He also said that the company is “fully prepared” for a conflict with the U.S.
Ren Zhengfei said that their annual tax payment is nearly 20 billion U.S. dollars. Their technology funding is nearly 20 billion U.S. dollars, and labour wages almost 30 billion U.S. dollars. In this case, it’s also hard for them to put a lot of money to do something, but they have been pushing through for years and efforts will bear fruit eventually.
At the end, Ren Zhengfei has once again reassured that Huawei will continue to serve its customers.
